From Stoddard's Turner County Pioneer History, "During the month of August, 1873, Mr. Daniel Unruh, with his family and a small party, arrived in New York. Mr. Unruh was a native of Crimea, Russia, and a member of the Mennonite Church. He came as far west as Elkhart, Indiana where he left his family and then traveled quite extensively for two months, which took him through most of the middle west states, including Dakota Territory. He viewed land west of Menno and decided to locate there. He went back and brought his family and party to Yankton, where they spent the winter. He eventually founded his home in Childstown Township and continued to reside there until the time of his death. His descendants are still in possession of the old homestead and extensive land holdings in the turkey Creek Valley."

The Unruh group was the first Russian Mennonite immigrants in Turner Co South Dakota. They arrived in America as the twelve Mennonite Deputies from Russia were leaving to return reports on America to the Russian Mennonites. The Karlswalde page has Tobias A. Unruh's Diary
