Mr. Unruh was a native of Crimea, Russia, and a member of the Mennonite Church. He came as far west as Elkhart, Indiana where he left his family and then traveled quite extensively for two months, which took him through most of the middle west states, including Dakota Territory. He viewed land west of Menno and decided to locate there. He went back and brought his family and party to Yankton, where they spent the winter. He eventually founded his home in Childstown Township and continued to reside there until the time of his death.
