Her son Jacob J. Duerksen wrote (http://www.brotherfield.com/books/JacobsDiary/6.html) that she died 6 Mar 1869 having lived 57 years, 4 months and 4 days. That would make her birth date 2 Nov 1811. No other records support that date. The AHSGR genealogy file card for her husband shows her birth date to be Sep 1805. Of the three I trust the church birth record most.

Mennonite Weekly Review - 8-18-2003:
Elmer Adrian, 79, of Buhler, KS, died July 16, 2003. He was born Oct. 18, 1923 to Jacob L. Adrian and Mary Neufeld Adrian on a farm southeast of Buhler in Reno County.
He attended Lily Dale Grade School and graduated from Buhler High School.
When he was 17 years old, he had to shoulder much of the responsibility of the family farm because his father had died and his older siblings moved away. On their farm they raised watermelons and grain.
He was baptized at an early age, confirming his faith in Jesus Christ and his membership into Buhler Mennonite Brethren Church. He enjoyed singing in a quartet, the church choir and the male chorus. He was active in Kiwanis Club.
On Oct. 3, 1947, he married Lovella Siemens. They lived on the farm until 1949, when he began a 33-year career as a custom harvester, partnering with Ike Pauls. He approached his livelihood as a worthwhile endeavor because he felt he was helping to feed the world.
His mission was to cut each field and deliver the grain as if he was the one that owned the land. His success was evident in that he cut many of the same fields for the same farmers from Texas to Montana, some for as many as 25 years.
During the winters he worked at jobs that included construction of the Hutchinson elevator, bus driver and electrician's helper. He was active as a Boy Scout leader.
In 1983, he retired from custom harvesting, and he and his wife traveled to South America, Europe and throughout North America. He enjoyed gardening and pool tournament competitions. He was devoted to helping others, often mowing a yard or clearing snow from others' driveways.
Survivors include his wife, Lovella; two children, Darrell and his wife, Holly Adrian, and Jean Olsen; a brother, Norman; a sister, Ruth Friesen; a sister-in-law, Helen Adrian; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Services were held at Buhler Mennonite Brethren Church. Burial was in Buhler Cemetery.

Christian Leader - Sept. 2003: ADRIAN, ELMER VICTOR, Buhler, KS, a member of Buhler MB Church, was born Oct. 18, 1923, southeast of Buhler to Jacob L. and Mary Neufeld Adrian and died July 16, 2003, at the age of 80. On October 3, 1947, he was married to Lovella Siemens who survives. He is also survived by one daughter, Jean Olsen; one son, Darrel and wife Holly; one brother, Norman and wife Myrtle; one sister, Ruth Friesen; one sister-in-law, Helen Adrian, four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

440 I am not certain that the three children I have listed with this family were actually siblings, but they are listed next to each other on the Silesia passenger list and it seems likely they are siblings (Tim Janzen, 26 Aug 1998). 461 Gospel Tidings - 5-15-1950: Mrs. Peter J. Schmidt, nee Lena Berg was born October 27, 1890 on a farm 4 miles west of Marion, South Dakota and departed this life March 18, 1950 at 7 :00 P.M. in the Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, So. Dak., reaching the age of 59 years, 4 months, and 21 days. She suffered from a serious cancer ailment, which had caused her health to fail for the past 9 years. This sickness was first checked. Then 2 years ago her same disease returned from which she never recovered and also very little relief could be obtained. She suffered also from various other ailments such as: Diabetes, Rheumatism, etc. In all of the years of her suffering she did not complain but carried her cross bravely, es- pecially in the last few weeks she concentrated on spiritual and heavenly things. She was united in holy matrimony to me, Peter J. Schmidt, on October 5, 1913. We have shared joys and sorrows for 36 years, 5 months, and 13 days. To this union were born 5 children, three sons and two daughters; Arthur, Albena, Hulda, Reuben, and Harvey. She had 8 grand- children, of whom two preceded her in death. Also her parents,5 sisters and 4 brothers have preceded her in death. Mother accepted Christ as her own personal Saviour in the spring of 1907. She was baptized that fall by Elder Henry I. Dick and was received into the membership of the Evangelical Men- nonite Brethren Church of Marion, S. Dak., where she remained a faithful member until her death. Mother always rejoiced in her salvation and had a great burden for the lost. She was faith- ful in witnessing for her Saviour to her family, relatives and friends, finding real joy and satis- faction in conversing with her friends about spiritual matters. Mother has endured many trials and afflic- tions in her life time, and we as a family will miss her so much, but we know that she is safely in the Arms of Jesus. She leaves to mourn her departure, her faith- ful husband, 5 children, 2 daughters-in-law, 2 sons-in-law, 6 grandchildren, 2 sisters and a host of relatives and friends. We sorrow not as those who have no hope, but are looking forward to meeting her again some bright day.

We have lost our Dear Sweet Mother, She no more on earth shall roam, And there'll never be another Who can take her place at home. Mother's life was true and faithful And her heart was filled with love, Trusting Jesus as her Saviour . Till she joined Him up above. Someday we shall go to meet her Where there'll be no more good-byes We can think of nothing sweeter Then our meeting in the skies. Oh, Dear Mother, how we miss you, But no more on earth you roam, Some sweet day we'll all be with you In that bright eternal home.

We wish to express our sincere Thanks and Appreciation to all our friends and neighbors for their kind deeds and thoughtfulness during her illness and our bereavement. The Family

Immigration: According to the, Migration From Russian Empire, Vol 2, Oct 1882 - Apr 1886, Johann Bargen and his family went from Bremen and Southampton to New York arriving 19 Sep 1885. Marie is listed as the wife, with Suzanna, 11, Johann, 10,Marie, 3, Elizabeth, 1, and Abraham, infant. The first clue was that their children, Susanna and John D., immigrated in 1885, according to the 1910 census. It would seem that Aganetha Weibe was the mother of Susanna and Johann and that Marie was the mother of Marie, Elizabeth, Abraham, and David. Johann Bergen

633 Biography: by Andrew Alan Brown Submitted, September 1997, in his own words
My name was chosen by Grandfather Abe Hiebert. Lived in Deer Island, Oregon from age 3 to age 8. Must have been 1969 to 1974. During this period my parents were active members of the Rainier, Oregon Seventh Day Adventist Church. The pastor was Glen Stambaugh. My dad owned a janitorial service. We moved to Chehalis, Washington when I was about 8 years old.

Attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Onalaska, Washington. Began first year of school at the Seventh Day Adventist School between Chehalis and Centralia. Incidentally, although it was my first year in school, I began in the second grade. While living in Chehalis, at age 9, I was attacked by a neighbor's (the Clarks) German Shepard, a mutt weighing 120 pounds to my 60. The dog practically tore my scalp off as well as lunching heartily on my left arm. We conducted a lawsuit against the Clarks.

At age 10, we moved to Oroville, Washington, where dad bought a dairy delivery distribution business, we lived on the south edge of town on 4.3 acres of alfalfa and pasture. I entered the third grade in the Ellisforde Seventh Day Adventist School. I skipped the fourth grade. I returned for the fifth and sixth, and skipped seventh, eighth and ninth grades while living in Oroville.

I began taking piano lessons again from a local teacher, Elizabeth Grunst. I loved piano, practiced consistently for four hours daily, and won first place in the country piano ' competitions twice. When I was fifteen, I began taking lessons from Mary Toy, in Spokane, where we drove bi-weekly.

We were very active in the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Oroville. As Adventists do, our entire community consisted exclusively of Adventist friends. Mom usually managed Vacation Bible School. Dad was a deacon, elder, took the pulpit, led song service, and many other things. My best friend in Oroville was Jim Lyonais.

Entertainment and play in Oroville was very nature based, since Oroville was not very big. There were great mountains on both sides, rivers on both sides/ and Lake Osoyoos, which was great for swimming and ice-skating in the winter. I also enjoyed fishing with my brothers or Jimmy.

When I was about twelve or so. Grandma Hiebert and her second husband, Kofa Finfrock, moved to Oroville so we could care for them. Grandma had Parkinson's disease. By the time I was fifteen, she left her husband, partly because of their differences, partly because her health and hallucinations were so severe, and moved in with us. About a year later, we placed her in a nursing home, where she died in 1983. Kofa died a couple of years later on Christmas day, at a senior citizens dinner. We did not like him much, so after we left Oroville, we had no contact.

In Oroville, my brothers and I worked for dad in his business. When I skipped school I worked on the dairy route two or three days per week. They were long days, especially in the summer. Dad would wake me at 2:30 AM and we would work together until 2, 3, or 4:00 P.M. I worked very hard, and enjoyed being an asset to my father. In 1981 Carnation ran us out of business, and we went into the forestry business. We contracted cleaning and thinning jobs from the US Forest Service. Dad gave me a small chainsaw/, which I used for a while. After my brothers and dad nearly cut themselves to death on numerous occasions, I lost my chainsaw privileges. Since this was work I hated passionately, I did not mourn this turn of events.

I continued work however, since there was plenty to do that did not require chainsaw operation. I stacked and burned slash, carried gas and water, and when we had thinning jobs on the young forests, I used loppers with everyone else. I still hated this work. Other times I worked in the apple orchard for a neighbor, Mr. Petry, and some friends, Dave Buckmiller and the Kleins, from church. This work I did not mind so much. All my work experience led me to the conclusion that work was not for me.

While living in Oroville, I discovered reading. I loved the Laura Ingalls Wilder books and the nature stories of Sam Campbell, and read the series numerous times. I also grew into National Geographic and National Wildlife. Early, maybe at the age of ten, when I decided that I would be a Christian, I woke early when I could and read the Bible and the works of the Adventist prophet, Ellen G. White. I remember reading Steps to Christ, The Desire of Ages, and The Great Controversy by the time I was twelve. The strongest message I learned from her was how bad and dangerous Catholics really are. By the time I was fourteen or fifteen, I branched into reading other books like Does God Exist by Hans Kung, a Catholic, and Erich Von Doniken, a kook. Mom enjoyed reading and discussing these books with me, probably just to keep tabs on where I was going. She always played an instrumental role in shaping my spiritual and philosophical growth.

I discovered politics. Although I have faint early memories of Nixon and Pandas, the voyages to the moon, and dad calling John Dean a liar, politics and world affairs broke through to me in a big way in Oroville. I remember the first time the pastor prayed for the hostages in Iran. I had no idea what Iran was or anything else that he was talking about. But I soon learned about Iran, the Soviet Union, Vietnam, Israel, Anwar Sadat, and everything else I could learn from reading Time Magazine and the Wenatchee World newspaper. I loved reading Jack Anderson and other columnists. I took to my politics passionately. Dad reprimanded for drawing aggressive US/Soviet war scenes during church. At school, I was reprimanded for creating an Ayatollah Komeini dartboard, whose face I exchanged for Brezhnev's and Quaddafi's. I took to geopolitics quite nicely. When Ronald Reagan came along, I was so ecstatic; I probably felt that Christ should feel comfortable postponing his return, since Reagan was sure to save the country. Reagan formed me as a Republican in a strong and irrevocable way. Although I no longer agree with everything he did, or with every stand the Republican Party takes, my political identity remains firmly with the GOP.

Our family's spiritual formation experienced foundational change during our stay in Oroville. In the early 1980's the Seventh Day Adventist Church went through severe tremblers. Corruption and mismanagement of money was disclosed. The prophet, Ellen G. White was exposed as a plagiarist.

Many people in the church across the world came to believe that the church, by observing itself as God's only true church, with Ellen White as a super biblical source of guidance, and a number of extra-Christian doctrines, bordered on being a cult, or at least wildly inappropriate in some of its teachings. Several theologians, including one with profound impact on our family, Australian Desmond Ford, led a movement out of Adventism and into mainstream Christianity. This exodus had no small impact on our family.

Being exclusively Adventist, in a cultural, social and spiritual sense, we were open to ostracism and rejection from our friends and community. Our confrontational style probably did not endear us to other members of our church. We were not shy about expressing doubts and quoting scripture that was contradictory of Adventist doctrine. It did not help others perception of us that when I chose to be baptized, I chose our former minister. Glen Stambaugh, to baptize me. He had been recently fired as a minister and was no longer an Adventist/ but a Methodist minister. But while this time was very upsetting, especially I think, for my parents, for me it was a time of great spiritual growth. The turmoil inspired me to search and to read the Bible for myself.

In 1984, after my grandmother passed away, and our church provided no reason to stay, we decided to move to Spokane. Laurie and Barry were in college, and Bryan was living in Portland, so it was just mom, dad and I. The reason we went to Spokane rather than back to the west coast is a bit funny. The way I saw it, we moved to Spokane because that was where my piano teacher lived. The real reason I chose Mrs. Toy to be my piano teacher is that she had a student from Spokane who was my first girlfriend. So, in a way, I think we moved to Spokane for Julie Mantyla, who shortly after I broke up with her, became a dike. I have always thought that to be unusually funny.

So we ended up in Spokane, living on North Ash Street. I was 17 and skipping another year of school. I don't remember what dad was doing for a living at first. I know he got a horrid job in a machine shop at some point. I went to modeling school and landed a few jobs co-coordinating fashion shows and even got into a couple of catalogues.

I remember one particularly tough day. I was riding my bike to a cattle call (an event where models are chosen for shows) and had forgotten to put on deodorant. I solved that problem by going into Rosauers and putting on deodorant. In the process, I created another problem by getting arrested for it. Calling dad to come discuss it and take me home was quite awful.

He also had a great interest in church activities, serving on many committees, such as Church Building, Foreign Relief, Mennonite Union Aid, and the Showalter Foundation. 739 (A-354A) He lived in the village of Konopat, Poland. His first marriage is problematic. The Alexanderwohl records give her number as his first wife, and his child Ancke's entry lists them as her parents. However, Trincke Wedels' own entry lists only her marriage to Tobias Wedel, and the dates of his other marriages conflict. Could there be an error in the record? Obit - Our father, John M. Classen was born in South Russia on the 10th of September, 1865. On June 5, 1887 he was baptized by Alt. Abr. L. Friesen and accepted into the church membership. On the 12th of July, 1891, he and I, Margareta Rempel, entered holy matrimony in which we have shared our joys and sorrows for 32 years and 11 days. We were blessed with 13 children; seven sons and six daughters. One son passed away in early infancy. He became a grandfather to ten grandchildren.

On the 22nd of October 1911, he was chosen to serve the Church as a deacon which he did so faithfully until his death. He died on the 23rd of July, 1923 at 1 p.m. after a 7-day severe abdominal infection. He attained the age of 58 years, 10 months, and 13 days.

"Oh, with sadness I must say You died far too soon - For all yours, who with your widow Are shedding tears at your casket. Wife and children, Brother, we will not See you in this life anymore and it will be painful. But one day you will be resurrected And then we will be rejoicing - When the Good will have won the victory, When the burdens will be removed from us, When the sting and curse of death will be conquered."

The entry for Alexanderwohl #30 states that he moved from there to Alexanderthal in 1830. The passport record says he migrated alone to Russia in 1820 from Zieglershuben, Prussia. He was 13 at the time of the passport, indicating a possible birth year of 1808. Johann Peter Dalke

866 Her first name and age are incorrectly given as Jacob, age 53, in the Nederland ship list published in Brothers in Deed, but review of the ship list microfilm shows her name to have probably been given as Loub and her age to have been 58 on the ship list. 975 Birth Source: Winkler, Manitoba. Mennonite Brethren Church Register (1893-1926). His n.s. birth date was 2 Nov 1911. My Conversion: Jacob G. Derksen. My conversion to Jesus took place at the early age of 6. I was living in Alexandertal, the village I was born in on Oct. 20, 1911. My parents had moved there in 1910 from Blumenort, and had bought my mother's parent's wirtschaft (farm). Alexandertal was a quiet village with a good school and a very nice church built with real burnt bricks. My parents thought this was a nice place to raise my older sister Annie, and me. Our village, like many other villages in the Molotschna, was a peaceful and good place to live. But things changed when Russia declared war on Germany in 1914. My father was conscripted into the Russian Army and performed the duties of a quartermaster far away in the Ural Mountains. Our village of Alexandertal was more or less the same because the war was far away. Sudden change came to our village when the German army occupied our part of Russia. The German army treated us well because we spoke German, but they retreated in 1917. These events made a big impression on me as a 6 year old boy. With my father gone at the war and my beloved grandfather dead the year before, I spent a lot of time with my mother and grandmother Goossen. In 1925 we emigrated to Canada. Jacob G. Derksen
